Microfiber cloths may not seem like a logical accessory for e-cig users to have, but they are arguably the most important. Usually used for cleaning screens or lenses, microfiber cloths are the perfect way to keep your e-cigarette as clean as possible.
Microfiber cloths have much finer fibers compared to regular cloths, and this means that they won’t leave behind anywhere near as much dust or lint. Given that excess dust is often part of the reason for an e-cig battery not working, having a microfiber cloth handy is a really good way of keeping your battery in good working condition.
The majority of microfiber cloths are reasonably cheap and can be bought in bulk online, so there’s no reason not to have a few stashed around the house or at work to keep your e-cig in good condition.
Portable USB Chargers
The lifesaver of any frequent festival-goer, portable USB chargers could prove very handy if you find your e-cig is running out of charge on a regular basis. While the blu PLUS+™ Rechargeable Kit comes with a case that will charge your e-cigs on the go, those who use the Xpress Kit or the blu PRO™ may need to find a different way of keeping their e-cigarette’s battery charged.
Most portable USB chargers can be charged in just a couple of hours and can then be plugged into your e-cig using it’s USB charging cable. Whilst we would recommend charging your e-cig from a laptop or wall outlet whenever possible, having a portable USB charger can serve as a good back-up if you’re out for a few hours.
Another way of charging your e-cig similar to this is to use a car charger which will plug into the outlet on the car’s dashboard before plugging into your e-cig’s USB charging cable. This can be useful if you forget to charge your e-cig and want to get it fully charged on the way to work.
When you’re taking apart your e-cigarette, you might find that it’s hard to keep all the parts in one place, especially if you’re vaping something larger like the blu PRO™. To help keep all the different parts of the e-cigarette in one place, a lot of vapers use small silicon mats when taking their device apart.
The silicon in the mat means that the parts won’t roll around, making it easier for you when you’re filling or cleaning your e-cig. There are some available with raised edges to make extra sure your stuff stays in place and there are others than have deeper indentations allowing you to stand the parts of your e-cigarette up which could be especially helpful when refilling. A silicone mat could also be useful if you like to vape in the car but worry about dropping your e-cig on the floor.
You can only plan so far ahead, and even the most prepared of vapers will find themselves in a jam with a battery that’s out of charge. Ultimately the best accessory any vaper can carry with them is an extra battery or two as this way you can avoid waiting to recharge your battery once it runs out and keep on vaping!
Vapor is the substance produced by e-cigarettes for inhalation. Vapor is created when the liquid inside the e-cigarette (known as e-liquid) is heated. After inhaling, the vapor is then exhaled by the person using the e-cigarette. Here, we take an in-depth look at how vapor is formed and what it’s made of.
What Is In E-Cigarette Vapor?
E-cigarette vapor is created when e-liquid is heated by the coil inside the clearomizer or tank. Once heated, the liquid turns into vapor, which can then be inhaled through the mouthpiece by the person using the e-cig (also known as the vaper). After being inhaled into the lungs, the vapor is then exhaled through the mouth or nose.
Similar in appearance to a small cloud (hence the term “cloud chasing”), e-cigarette vapor is comprised of small droplets of water which evaporate a few seconds after being released into the air. The other ingredients found in e-cigarette vapor are largely the same as those found in e-liquid, namely propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, water, flavorings and nicotine. Does Vapor Smell?
E-cigarette vapor will typically carry the same smell as the flavor you’re vaping. However, e-cigarette vapor won’t leave a smell behind after it evaporates. This is because the particles that make up the vapor do not latch onto objects in the same way as other substances. This means you can vape inside without worrying about a lingering smell on your clothes or furniture.
How Long Does Vapor Last?
E-cigarette vapor will hang in the air for a few seconds before it starts to evaporate, although the amount of time it stays in the air will depend on the weather. On more humid days, you may find that the vapor may last for slightly longer before dissipating. The ingredients in your e-liquid will also make a difference; a higher percentage of PG in your e-liquid creates thinner clouds of vape that will evaporate more quickly, and more VG in your e-liquid will mean it takes longer to disappear.
All e-cigarettes are powered by batteries located inside the e-cig itself and most can be charged and recharged multiple times. (Which is why here at blu, we call our batteries “rechargeable devices”.) The mechanics of an e-cigarette battery are simple: the battery powers the coil inside the clearomizer, tank or disposable, which is then heated to convert the e-liquid into vapor. This vapor is then inhaled by the person using the e-cigarette.
But how does it all come together?
If you’re curious as to how e-cigarette batteries work, look no further! Here we’ll go through a few of the key points on how your battery powers your e-cig and how you can make sure you look after it as best you can.
What Are E-Cigarette Batteries Made From?
Most e-cigarette batteries (including blu rechargeable devices) are lithium-based. Lithium batteries tend to hold a charge for much longer than other types of batteries, and e-cig batteries are no different in this regard. Lithium batteries are also used in a number of different everyday items such as cameras and clocks.
The battery itself is turned on either with a button or via a pressure sensor that detects a change in air flow. It is sometimes attached to a smart chip which detects usage and activates the heating coil as well as an LED light at the tip of the e-cig. The same LED light can also be activated by the chip when the battery is low, and some e-cigs will flash or pulse when this is the case. Most batteries are recharged using a USB charging cable rather than a device-specific plug.
How Long Do E-Cigarette Batteries Last?
The simple answer is that it depends. Generally speaking, the larger the battery, the longer it will last between charges. However, it’s also important to remember that your e-cig will still need to be fully charged for it to last as long as possible. The battery needs to be used fairly frequently to enable it to hold the maximum charge.
What Are The Different Types Of Battery?
Most e-cigarettes will use one of two different types of battery: automatic or manual. Automatic batteries are fitted with a pressure sensor that detects when you start vaping and will turn on when you inhale. Manual batteries are activated by holding down a button on the side of the e-cigarette. These types of batteries usually need to be switched on by pressing the button when you inhale.
Although there is no necessity for either to be bigger or smaller, automatic batteries tend to be slightly smaller and manual batteries are usually larger. For this reason, vapers who like to use their e-cigs for longer periods of time between charging tend to opt for e-cigarettes with manual batteries.
Some people also prefer manual batteries as there is less of a delay when inhaling the vapor. As you can start pressing the button before you inhale, you can give your e-cig time to produce the vapor before inhaling, whereas automatic e-cigs only start producing vapor after you’ve started inhaling. However, the delay is only slight and usually lasts between 100 to 200 milliseconds, and the majority of people who use automatic batteries are accustomed to this pause when vaping.

Cloud chasing is the act of exhaling large plumes of vapor after using an e-cigarette. Vapers who cloud chase often use e-liquid with a higher percentage of vegetable glycerin as this base allows for larger clouds of vapor to be exhaled.
Some sources say that cloud chasing started on the West Coast, although its exact region of origin is unknown. What is for sure is that a small group of vapers were looking for something more from their e-cigarettes. On the rise in popularity of cloud chasing, the inventor of the e-cig Hon Lik said:
” When automotive manufacturers first started out, they were not thinking about a sport to be called Formula One. You always have groups of people who are looking for excitement.”
Many vapers across the world have embraced cloud chasing as a more exciting way to vape. Some prefer to do this recreationally with friends and challenge each other to blow larger and larger clouds; however, there are a few vapers who take cloud chasing more seriously and actually compete in competitions.
Cloud chasing competitions are populated with so-called “professional vapers” and “cloud gazers”, those who enjoy simply watching the competitions. Some of the competitions will offer free vaping gear to the best cloud chasers, and a few more serious competitions will feature sponsors and even offer cash prizes! The competitions typically boil down to two different attributes: size and skill. Some competitions challenge vapers to blow the largest clouds they can, whereas others ask vapers to wow the judges with their skills. Some vapers have been known to be able to blow vapor distances of up to six feet.
In the skill competitions, vapers will often exhale in creative ways. One common vaping trick is called “The Dragon” and can be performed by exhaling from the nose and the sides of the mouth at the same time. Another trick, often referred to as “Pushing The O”, involves blowing rings of vapor which can then be manipulated with the hands and by blowing additional vapor rings.
Some long-term vapers have voiced concerns about cloud chasing, particularly in public spaces. Opponents of cloud chasing argue that it gives vaping a negative image, with the concern being that the act of blowing large clouds near non-vapers will annoy them. However, when cloud chasing is practiced responsibly, there shouldn’t be anything for non-vapers or non-cloud chasing vapers to worry about. Fortunately for cloud chasers, it’s clear that this new “sport” is here to stay.
E-liquid is made up from just a few different ingredients: Propylene Glycol (PG), Vegetable Glycerin (VG), water, flavorings and nicotine. E-liquids typically feature both PG and VG, with one of the two often more dominant than the other. Some e-liquids are 0% nicotine, and these contain exactly the same ingredients minus the nicotine.
How Is E-Liquid Made?
Making e-liquid is a lengthy process, and as with any other recipe, e-liquid ingredients need to be carefully measured before mixing. This is particularly important with nicotine, as it needs to be measured perfectly to ensure that the correct nicotine percentage is obtained.
First, the flavorings are added to the base of PG and VG, and then the mix. It usually requires only a small amount of flavorings to give the e-liquid the punch it needs. Next, the nicotine is then added to the mixture, which is then shaken to ensure the ingredients blend together. After, the e-liquid is left for a few days, allowing the flavor to become richer or more profound. This process is sometimes referred to informally as ‘steeping’ and works in a similar way that you might age a cut of meat or allow a bottle of wine to air before drinking.
Although it sounds simple here, the process is actually quite complicated and we don’t encourage you to try it out for yourself. Just stick to vaping and leave mixing e-liquid to us!
Why Does E-Liquid Use PG And VG?
Propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin are commonly used as additives in a number of different products. Using different ratios of PG and VG will result in your e-liquid giving you a slightly different vape. PG is flavorless, making it a more common base as it will have less of an effect on the taste of the e-liquid. More PG in your e-liquid will give you a thinner liquid – making the e-cig easier to clean – as well as thinner clouds when vaping. Conversely, more VG in your e-liquid will give you much bigger clouds, although its sweeter taste means that it isn’t suitable for use with all flavors.
Many people around the world now use e-cigarettes every day, but where did they come from? In this blog blu takes you through the history of vaping, from its humble beginnings right up to the present day.
In 1963, an American named Herbert A. Gilbert came up with the first complete design for an e-cigarette. The device produced steam rather than vapor and did not contain nicotine. Although the device was patented and a prototype was produced, it did not receive the same amount of attention as modern e-cigarettes and was not produced on a large commercial scale.
The production and development of e-cigarettes was largely quiet in the 80s and 90s, but in 2001 a Chinese pharmacist named Hon Lik began working on the modern e-cigarette. The main difference between Hon Lik’s initial designs and the e-cigarettes we vape today is that the early-stage e-cigs were powered using ultrasonic technology rather than a battery-powered heating element. These e-cigarettes were also made from just three parts and there were no open system e-cigarettes. During this time Hon Lik was also responsible for creating e-liquid by experimenting with various liquids that could hold nicotine and produce vapor.
In 2003 Hon Lik patented his design and it was introduced to the Chinese market in 2004. The device was initially called an “e-cigar” and it soon developed a loyal following in China. Other versions of Hon Lik’s design were also developed and sold over the internet to the US by small companies.
Expansion and Innovation
Word of the e-cigarette’s success began spreading to Europe and the US, and e-cigarettes were being sold in both regions by the end of 2007. Early adopters of the technology began innovating and the cartomizer was invented by brothers Umer and Tariq Sheikh. Unlike previous designs, the cartomizer featured a heating coil contained within the liquid store. It could be filled with e-liquid manually rather than needing to be replaced with a new cartridge.
This invention allowed for further development of open system e-cigarettes, and in turn led to the development of the clearomizer in 2009. The clearomizer was very well received as it let vapers to monitor to amount of e-liquid in their device. Although originally a disposable component of the overall device, clearomizers were soon re-developed so that could be used more than once.
E-cigarettes were seen by many as a passing trend when they first burst onto the scene, but they continued to grow in popularity and in 2009 blu was founded in Charlotte, North Carolina.
By 2010 there was an increasing amount of legislation in place affecting where e-cigarettes could be used and sold. Some countries such as Australia initially banned e-cigarettes completely and many other countries began introducing laws to protect consumers from ill-made products. The FDA also banned the importation of e-cigs in 2009 and blocked several companies from shipping their products to the US; however, the ban was soon repealed. By 2015 roughly two-thirds of large countries had introduced some form of legislation relating to e-cigarettes.
In 2016, the FDA introduced new legislations outlining its regulation regarding the production and sale of e-cigarettes. The FDA now monitors all e-cigarette products as tobacco products, including e-liquids, and part of the regulation requires manufacturers to submit any plans for new products before they can be sold to the public. Many states have also moved to create their own vaping laws which mostly affect where they can be used.
Current and Future State of E-Cigarettes
The E-cigarette industry continue to grow in popularity, and there are now more than 9 million regular vapers in the US alone. The industry itself is also continuing to grow with some analysts predicting that it will be worth over $50 billion by the year 2025.
The journey of e-cigarettes is far from over, and it is clear that they have come a long way in just over a decade since they were first developed on a commercial scale. Before the turn of the century we could have hardly imagined where e-cigarettes would be now, and this will make it fascinating to see what the latest inventions and innovations are in the years to come.
