Traveling With Your E-Cigarettes: Can I Vape On A Train?

A train track winding through a green forest

When it comes to mass transit, e-cigarette use is often prohibited. Vaping is currently banned aboard many trains and platforms in the US, as Amtrak has announced that e-cigs can’t be used either on board the train or while you’re waiting on the platform. Furthermore, if the state or local government has banned vaping in public spaces (as is the case in New York City, Philadelphia and Chicago), you’ll have to wait until you’re off the train, off the platform, and onto neutral territory – i.e. the street – to use your e-cigarette. The same goes for the rail system across the pond, as signs prohibiting e-cig use popped up in train stations across Great Britain in recent years.

In spite of this, traveling by train is a little easier for vapers as your e-cigarettes won’t draw as much scrutiny before you climb aboard. So unless you’re catching a train to the Great White North, you can take as much e-liquid as you can carry!

If you’re planning to head somewhere new and want to make sure you can stock up if your e-cigarette or e-liquid runs out, take a look at our Store Locator for a list of all the places that sell blu® products.

Traveling With Your E-Cigarettes: Can I Vape On A Cruise?

For vapers looking to take a cruise, most cruise liners have designated areas where you’ll be allowed to vape. Depending on the ship these areas can be either indoors or outdoors, so don’t assume that just because you’re on deck you’re ok to vape.

Carnival allows vaping in common areas such as its casinos and nightclubs. Royal Caribbean states that you can use e-cigarettes in designated outdoor areas on the starboard side of the ship with the exception of its Oasis-class ships, although it’s worth noting there aren’t any indoor vaping areas. Princess Cruises allows you to vape in your room (although not on the balcony) and in designated areas across the ship. Costa Cruises has a similar policy, as e-cigarettes can be used in your room and in certain areas like the cigar lounge. Vaping regulations tend to vary depending on the company you’re traveling with, so make sure to do plenty of research before you set sail to find the right holiday experience for you.

Before you pack your bags, you’ll want to make sure you’ve planned ahead and taken enough e-liquid to last you the entire trip. There usually aren’t restrictions on liquids in personal luggage on cruise ships, although it’s always best to check with the travel company prior to your trip. You can also check where your ship is due to make port and grab some blu® Liquid or Tank refills when you’re back on dry land.

Traveling With Your E-Cigarettes: Can I Vape On A Plane?

Unfortunately vaping isn’t allowed on airplanes as it is prohibited aboard both domestic and international flights by federal law. Initially there was some confusion over whether vaping was permitted in airports and aboard planes themselves, as different airlines and airports had different sets of regulations. The rules have changed a lot over the years, not just in regard to vaping but also which devices and e-liquids are allowed on planes.

The rules on vaping inside airports isn’t covered by federal law in the same way, although most airports now have some form of regulation on e-cigarettes. Depending on where you’re departing from, there are some designated areas where you’ll be able to take a quick vape break before flying. The best advice is to check out the airport’s rules before packing your bags.

It’s important to understand the regulations around e-cigarettes as well as why they’re in place. E-cigarettes are not permitted in checked baggage and must be taken in carry-on bags through security. This means that any e-liquids will need to be placed in a clear plastic bag as is the case with all other liquids taken through security, and this also means that you cannot take any container with more than the limit of 3.4 ounces of liquid inside. Fortunately, all blu® Liquids come in bottles of around 0.35 ounces, so there’s no need to start transferring your e-liquid into smaller containers. Clearomizers can also leak during the flight, so it’s a good idea to empty yours before take-off.

With this in mind, make sure to consider how much e-liquid you’ll need for your trip, as depending on where you’re going, it might be tricky to purchase e-liquid at your intended destination. Some countries may not stock the blu flavors that you use, and furthermore some countries have stricter vaping laws than in the US. For more information, check out our guide on Global Vaping Laws.

Once you’ve been through security, it’s a good idea to wrap your e-cig and e-liquids in a paper towel or place them in a Ziploc bag. This is because the change in pressure experienced as the plane climbs in altitude can cause the liquid to leak. Keep in mind that you aren’t allowed to charge your e-cigarettes during the flight, so if you’re using the blu PLUS+™ Rechargeable Kit, make sure to remove the e-cigs from the case to avoid charging them whilst in the air.
